Organisers said more than 1 million people took to the streets of Hong Kong on June 9, 2019, to protest the government’s proposal to change extradition laws to allow the transfer of fugitives to more jurisdictions, including mainland China.

Described as one of the largest and most unified protests in more than a decade, the massive march prompted rallies in solidarity in at least 29 cities around the world.

After the march, the government said it would move ahead tabling the contentious measure for a second reading in the Legislative Council on June 12.

Later in the evening and early on June 10, clashes broke out between hundreds of activists and police.
