Since India passed new agriculture laws in September 2020, farmers have been protesting out of fear that it will leave them at the mercy of big corporations. The legislation means farmers are now free to sell their produce to anyone at any price, instead of selling through state-controlled markets at assured rates. On December 8, the farmers’ stand-off with the government gave way to a nationwide strike which is now reportedly being supported by at least 25 political parties, as well as trade unions and retail groups. Farmers Ved Singh and his brother are among those who are angry and afraid that the legislation will eventually destroy their livelihoods.
