Afghan envoy calls on countries to contain Taliban’s steady takeover of Afghanistan

The Afghan government estimates over 1,000 civilians were killed in July, when the Taliban started taking over large swathes of the country. The militant group now controls 65 per cent of Afghanistan and has taken a quarter of the country’s provincial capitals since the withdrawal of US-led troops. In an interview with the Post, Afghanistan’s top envoy in China, Javid Ahmad Qaem, called on the international community to stand behind the Afghan government at the risk of dire consequences not just for the Afghan people but for overall global security.
