Argentina's Macri wins key midterm vote

The governing coalition of President Mauricio Macri of Argentina has emerged as the clear winner in Sunday’s midterm election.

The vote was widely seen as a referendum on Macri and his pro-market economic reforms.

The result gives the president a boost if he decides to stand for a second term in presidential elections in two years time. Meanwhile, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, Argentina’s former president, returned to the political fray, winning a seat in the Senate.

Al Jazeera's Daniel Schweimler reports from Buenos Aires.
