Assad and Putin meet to discuss post-war phase in Syria

The Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, has held talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in a surprise visit to Russia on Monday.

The meeting came ahead of a summit in Sochi where Putin will host the leaders of Turkey and Iran, and a Syrian opposition conference in Saudi Arabia.

Russia, Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia all appear to be looking for a way out of the Syrian war, while Assad looks more firmly ensconced than he has in years.

Al Jazeera's Rory Challands reports from Moscow.
