California becomes COVID-19 epicentre amid nationwide surge

California is the new epicentre of the COVID-19 surge in the United States. The state has surpassed 27,000 coronavirus deaths, and officials say there is a new death every 15 minutes on average. Vaccines provide a ray of hope, but there are many complaints about the slow roll-out of life-saving jabs, in California and across the country.

California reached a new single-day record for new coronavirus cases with 74,000 confirmed on Monday.

The number of COVID-19 patients in ICU wards has now quadrupled in the US state since November.

Al Jazeera's Rob Reynolds reports from Los Angeles, United States.
