This week, the South Dakota Senate passed a bill that would prevent transgender women from participating in high school and college women’s sports leagues. Those supporting the bill claim it’s an effort to protect women’s sports, but others say it amounts to bullying and transphobia. More than 20 other states are considering similar bills. Chase Strangio serves as the deputy director for transgender justice at the ACLU. The attorney was lead counsel for the ACLU in representing Chelsea Manning. Strangio previously worked as a public defender, and he co-founded the Lorena Borjas Community Fund, which helps provide bail for trans people. We talk to him about the South Dakota legislation, similar bills across the country, the mental health toll of transphobia, and more.
