Female office workers in Chinese cities have turned to self-defence classes after a violent incident in Tangshan, Hebei in June 2022, when a group of men​​ brutally attacked four female diners at a restaurant. The attack was captured on surveillance video, causing widespread outrage across China, and sparking greater awareness among women about the importance of personal safety. Following the Tangshan attack, places offering self-defence classes for women have seen an uptick in enquiries. Among them is Jiufu Boxing in central Beijing, which has reportedly seen a jump in membership, especially among women between the ages of 20-30.
