About 50,000 students began their three-day college entrance examination at over 2,200 venues across Shanghai on July 7, 2022, after it was postponed for a month due to a recent Covid-19 outbreak. The exam, known as gaokao in China, is considered the most important examination for students. Each exam lasted several hours, as parents kept vigil outside testing sites dressed in red or yellow, which are symbols of good luck.
