EarthCam: Massive Winter Storm Hits NYC | LIVE

EARTHCARM: MASSIVE SNOWSTORM HITS NYC: This is a live EarthCam glimpse of Times Square on Monday afternoon as a massive winter storm continues to barrel many parts of the Northeast U.S. More than a foot of snow is expected in many states, including New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

There is wide consensus among experts that the climate crisis could be contributing to the severity and frequency of these types of winter storms. As temperatures continue to rise in the Arctic, incidents of sudden stratospheric warming affect the region’s polar vortex. Frigid Arctic air is transferred further south, to areas of North America, Europe, & Asia. This current storm is already the second such polar vortex disruption of the season, with the chance of a third still to come.

The impact of the blizzard has been widespread: Many east coast flights have been canceled and travel conditions on roads & highways in the region remain hazardous. Perhaps most alarming, the storm has also disrupted vaccination schedules in many states at a time when health officials are desperately trying to ramp up inoculations to compete with new variants of COVID-19 spreading within the country.
