A group of elderly Chinese men, mostly in their 60s, have been working out daily at a makeshift gym filled with DIY equipment. The Erqi Gym Club in Beijing was founded in 1984, one year after China lifted a ban on bodybuilding that had been in place since 1953. The sport, which first emerged in China in the 1930s, was outlawed by the Chinese Communist Party as “bourgeois” and “narcissistic”.
