Taiwanese pilots landed F-16 fighter jets on a rural highway in the island’s southern county of Pingtung on September 15, 2021, as part of a week of military drills preparing for a possible attack from mainland Chinese forces. The civilian highways were designed and built for rapid conversion into military runways as part of President Tsai Ing-wen’s promise to turn Taiwan into a “porcupine”, meaning highly mobile and difficult to attack. This year’s war games are taking place as mainland authorities continue to exert pressure on the self-ruled island, which Beijing views as its territory.
