Japanese citizens were in shock after former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Japan's longest-serving leader, died hours after being shot on July 8, 2022, while campaigning for a parliamentary election. Many were appalled that a shooting happened in Japan, where political violence is rare and guns are tightly controlled.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin expressed their condolences before a trilateral meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi on the sidelines of the Group of 20 meeting in Bali, Indonesia.

China’s foreign ministry spokesman also expressed shock and extended condolences to Abe’s family.
