Park Jihyun first left North Korea in 1998, when she was smuggled across the country’s northern border and sold to a Chinese man. Over the next 23 years, she endured abuse, was repatriated back to North Korea and forced to work in a squalid labour camp while being separated from her son. But Park has never let go of her quest for a better life. The 52-year-old is now standing for election as a Conservative Party candidate in Bury, a town near the northern city of Manchester where Park has lived since 2008.
