The number of confirmed deaths from a devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Haiti on August 14, 2021, has soared to at least 1,297. More than 5,700 other people are now known to have been injured by the tremor that crumbled homes and schools. With hundreds of people feared trapped under the rubble, rescue crews are desperately searching for survivors ahead of an approaching tropical storm. Officials fear that rescue efforts could soon be hindered by heavy rain and possible flash flooding.
