Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers have ordered the closure of secondary schools for girls only hours after female pupils were allowed back into classrooms. The Taliban said it has yet to decide on what type of uniforms the girls must wear. March 23, 2022, was the first date high school girls had been allowed back in class since the hardline group seized power in August 2021. The Taliban had insisted they wanted to ensure that schools for girls aged 12-19 were segregated and operating according to Islamic principles. While many provinces say they continue to provide education to “all students”, most have closed institutions for girls and women.
