A hospital train rolled away from the eastern front lines of Ukraine’s war with invading Russian forces on April 10, 2022, ferrying wounded people to relative safety in the western city of Lviv. Among the 48 wounded and elderly patients on board was electrician Evhen Perepelytsai, who lost a leg during shelling of his hometown of Hirske in the Luhansk region. The train evacuation was the first from the east since a Russian strike killed 57 people at a railway station in Kramatorsk on April 8. Ukrainian authorities have urged civilians in the east of the country to flee westwards amid fear of a renewed assault by Russian troops.
