Don’t hold on to someone who is no longer in your life.

Holding on to someone isn’t just about hoping and yearning to be with the person. When we cannot let go of anger towards a person who has left, we are also holding on to the person. Either way, we’re not in a good place.

When we still love someone who is no longer in our lives, our emotions can alternate between sobbing in despair wishing for the person and crying out in hate and anger for what they’ve done to us, and how they’ve broken us.

This is where it becomes urgent to remind ourselves that people can break our hearts, but no one on this earth can break us. People can abandon you, but nobody can reject you. People can leave you, but they cannot take your worth with them.

If you feel like weeks have gone by where everything in your life has taken a backseat, where you’ve been neglecting your physical and mental health like it’s some kind of self-inflicted punishment, it’s time to start respecting and valuing yourself again.

If you feel like months and years have gone by where so much of your life is still consumed by this person - whether in desire or hatred - it’s time to start letting go of a person who shouldn’t be taking up so much space in your life.

People can be gone from our lives but they can still take up so much space that everything else is our lives is less bright. And the only reason this is happening, is because we’re holding on.

What has happened is in the past. Don’t hold on to the past, don’t let nostalgic memories or burning anger steal all the light and joy in your life right now.

There are so many people in this world who can love and value you, when you can first love and value yourself. Let go for yourself, allow yourself to be happy, always.
