How do I know I'm special, if you treat everyone else so nice?
Based on this strange yet very real perception of love, we instinctively learn from a very young age to behave differently with the people we love, so much so that we've almost cultivated two different personalities - one that our friends, family and lovers see, and the other that everybody else sees.
Every one of us is capable of being amazingly warm and open, yet we choose to reserve that part of ourselves, to be revealed only with the people we love.
We think that it means more, when we only show the wonderful part of ourselves to certain people, to prove that they're special. Of course a different relationship exists with the people we love and care about - you wouldn't just cook for any stranger or take them on holidays. But what's unfortunate with this divide of personality is that we're also extending less warmth, less openness and less care with the people we don't know, or don't know very well.
We think it doesn't matter, because it doesn't matter to us what people outside our inner circle think about us, but it's not about what people think, it’s about how we are as a person. We can think that we are only nice and caring to people who 'deserve it', but maybe in truth we only feel safe and secure to be open with people whom we know well. With everyone else, we're on guard.
There are many things we would only say to or do fo the people we love, but when it comes to our warmth, our laughter, our openness... we don't have to reserve that. We don't need to have two different personalities.
It is when we're open and warm that we feel the happiest, because that's when we feel the most free. So don't hide away the best part of yourself away, be amazing all the time, not just with the people you love, and you'll find that it's one of the best ways to be happy, always.
