Japan’s government approved a record US$52 billion defence budget for 2021 on December 21, 2020. Defence spending will rise by 1.1 per cent, marking a ninth consecutive increase. It is the first defence budget from the administration of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and will boost the strength of Japan’s forces against potential threats from neighbouring countries, including China.
