White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki holds a press briefing. Moments ago, Pres. Biden fulfilled another promise he made on the campaign trail by signing an executive order reversing former Pres. Trump’s ban on trans people serving in the military. The order ‘immediately prohibits involuntary separations, discharges, and denials of reenlistment or continuation of service on the basis of gender identity or under circumstances relating to gender identity,’ a White House statement said.

‘President Biden believes that gender identity should not be a bar to military service, and that America’s strength is found in its diversity.’ Newly confirmed Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has voiced his support of reversing the ban. ‘If you’re fit and you’re qualified to serve and you can maintain the standards, you should be allowed to serve,’ he told senators during his confirmation hearing. ‘And you can expect that I will support that throughout.’

Later today, Pres. Biden will continue with his slew of executive actions with an order targeting American manufacturing. The order is part of Biden’s ‘Buy American’ effort, which calls for an additional $400 billion of procurement investments to purchase products manufactured in the United States. Biden has said that his economic plan is not only in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but would serve as a ‘roadmap’ to a more equitable economy.
