With the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group defeated by government forces in northern Iraq, the question of Kurdish independence could pose a new problem in the country.
Tensions have increased since a referendum on independence for the northern Kurdistan region was announced last month.
Some fear the result of that vote could lead to another confrontation in Iraq.
