A student from China’s southern city of Guangzhou nearly missed getting to his gaokao college entrance exam because he was locked inside his home. Rescuers managed to free him just in time to join the millions of students across the country who started sitting this year’s edition of the gruelling tests on June 7, 2022. The usual challenges of the gaokao have only deepened this year. The class of 2022 is also known as the “pandemic generation”, because they are the first students to have gone through all three years of China's high school curriculum amid Covid-19 disruptions. Challenges have included having to bounce between online and in-person classes and adapting to frequent coronavirus testing, lockdowns and sudden classroom closures.
