Macron visits Paris’ notorious Clichy-sous-Bois

French President Emmanuel Macron visited Clichy-sous-Bois, one of Paris' most troubled and well-known suburbs, for the first time as president.

Twelve years ago two teenagers were killed there while being chased by the police.

The incident sparked three weeks of violence in a suburb whose residents feel discriminated against in their struggle with poverty, unemployment and lack of opportunity.

Macron is promising increased investment in jobs and education and tax breaks for investors there.

But some residents remained sceptical, saying that six months into his term, Macron’s policies favour the rich over the poor.

Deputy Mayor of Clichy-sous-Bois says the visit is “symbolic” and important but needs to be followed with action.

Al Jazeera’s Natacha Butler reports from Clichy Sous Bois, France.
