The Crimson Polaris was nearing the end of its voyage when it ran aground and subsequently splintered apart, according to the Japanese Coast Guard. The 21-member crew was airlifted off the ship to safety, but the vessel left an oil spill 3 miles long. Japanese authorities have continued to monitor the situation in the days since.
