Using a pseudonym to protect her identity, “Thein Nu” said she was gang-raped by three Myanmar military soldiers who burst into her home in northern Rakhine State in June 2020. Socially stigmatised and abandoned by her husband, the 36-year-old mother of four did not remain silent. She filed a legal complaint against Myanmar’s military, which resulted in a rare victory. A military tribunal has sentenced her three rapists to 20 years in prison with hard labour. But Thein Nu says she considers her legal victory only the start of a long battle against Myanmar’s military.
