North Korea says missile programme is self-defence

North Korea's ambassador to the UN claimed the nation had the right to defend itself against US aggression, while China and Russia argued that US belligerence was making dialogue unlikely and questioned the Trump administration's commitment to a peaceful resolution.

North Korea has defended its ballistic missile programme as self-defence at the United Nations Security Council.
The public session was called after Pyongyang tested its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile last month and many of the speakers condemned North Korea's actions.
But the meeting, which was attended by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, failed to come up with any decisive action to curb activity on the Korean Peninsula.
