Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat has stepped aside as the designated next leader who would take over when current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong retires. Heng made the unexpected announcement in a letter published in local media on April 8, 2021, prompting a major shake-up of the succession plans of the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP). The PAP, co-founded by Prime Minister Lee’s father Lee Kuan Yew, has ruled the island state since 1959 and for decades has traditionally elected its top leaders after reaching a consensus among members of each new generation of senior leaders.
