Pope Francis fails to condemn Myanmar over Rohingya

Myanmar's brutal military crackdown on the Rohingya Muslims, which has been described by the UN as a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing", will be discussed at a special session by the UN human rights council early next month.

It is an issue that loomed large over the first visit of the head of the Catholic Church to the country.

But Pope Francis has, as widely expected, avoided any direct mention of the word “Rohingya”, as he appeared alongside the country's leader Aung San Suu Kyi. He insisted instead that Myanmar should respect the rights of all ethnic groups.
