Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr gave his first national address on July 25, 2022, promising to reform taxes, upgrade infrastructure and transform agriculture. He also vowed no further Covid-19 lockdowns despite a recent uptick in cases. Ahead of his speech, thousands of activists marched to voice concerns over Marcos Jnr’s accountability and the nation’s economy. Marcos Jnr’s father was the dictator Ferdinand Marcos, who ruled the Philippines for two decades before having to flee in 1986; he died in 1989. The new leader also vowed to not “abandon even one square inch of territory” to any foreign power.
