Thousands of protesters in Sri Lanka have taken over Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s office after he was given presidential power on July 13, 2022, when President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the island nation. People were seen singing and relaxing within the compound as armed guards cordoned off areas where valuable items are kept. The South Asian country has seen months of anti-government protests, fuelled by accusations of government mismanagement that sparked the country’s worst economic crisis since independence.
