Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled to the Maldives on July 13, 2022, as the South Asian nation continues to grapple with its worst economic crisis since gaining independence in 1948. Parliament speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced that Rajapaksa had appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as acting president. Thousands of protesters stormed Wickremesinghe’s office hours after the announcement, demanding his resignation.
