The act was originally passed in 1994 and has been reauthorized four times before expiring in February 2019. The latest version of the bill, which offers legal protections for women who have experienced domestic or sexual violence, also prevents former partners who have been convicted of domestic violence from obtaining a firearm. It is expected to pass the House, but faces a challenge in the evenly-divided Senate.
