A team of 4,500 rescuers has arrived at Lushan county in China’s southwestern Sichuan province, where a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck on June 1, 2022. At least four people have been reported killed during the quake. The first tremor was reported at 5pm, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre, before a second 4.5 magnitude quake came three minutes later. A level 3 emergency response, the third highest in China’s four-tier system, has been issued. Rescuers are scrambling to search for trapped survivors. Priority has also been given to guarding against possible aftershocks, as well as examining infrastructure for hidden damage and taking precautions against related disasters including landslides and loose boulders triggered by heavy rain.
