Rex Tillerson makes unannounced trips to Afghanistan and Iraq

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has made an unannounced visit to Iraq to hold talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.

The meeting follows heightened tension between the two countries about the role of the Popular Mobilisation Forces in Iraq.

Tillerson has called for the Iran-backed militias to be sent home.

It's been a busy day for Tillerson - he began with a separate short trip to Afghanistan to meet with its leaders and discuss confronting the Taliban.

Al Jazeera's Patty Culhane reports from Doha.
