Chinese President Xi Jinping was in Hong Kong on June 30 and July 1, 2022, for official celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of the city’s return to Chinese rule, and to attend the inauguration ceremony of the city’s new leader, John Lee Ka-chiu. While slogans and banners were visible everywhere, the city was generally quiet amid heavy police presence and road blocks of major streets, which were largely empty as the No 3 typhoon signal was in effect for most of the day. Xi’s visit was his first trip outside mainland China since the Covid-19 pandemic began.
