A marine base in the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolayiv was turned into rubble after reportedly getting hit by three Russian missiles on March 18, 2022. According to Ukrainian military officials, about 200 soldiers were sleeping in the barracks when the attack took place. There are no official casualty figures, but officials estimated that up to 40 Ukrainian soldiers were killed. On March 20, Russia said it had used hypersonic missiles to strike Ukrainian military facilities in Mykolayiv. Russian President Vladimir Putin has called the missile “an ideal weapon”, given its speed and ability to overcome air-defence systems. It is unclear if the marine base in Mykolayiv was hit by these weapons.
