SEEING EYE TO EYE: EMOTIONAL SYNCHRONY

Feeling connected to someone is a core human need. But what does this even mean, to feel “connected”? Feeling connected is about feeling seen, understood, feeling like we are on the same wavelength. It’s a sense of communion, whereby two minds assume the same viewpoint and experience the ecstasy of being on the same page, beholding the same world together. This space that opens up between two people is often called the intersubjective, or what mystic Martin Buber calls I-Thou relationships. And it turns out, philosophers of mind, those that study phenomenology, have another name for this: Emotional Synchrony. The need to connect and be “on the same wavelength” is core to what makes us humans. A fascinating article in @aeonmag by Hayden Kee artfully breaks it down by explaining our facility for and need for emotional attunement and synchrony.
