Critics of the Senegalese government accuse the president of using the courts to eliminate opponents.
Protests broke out after opposition leader Ousmane Sonko was arrested and accused of rape in February.
He has since been released but several politicians, civil society actors, and trade unionists have been arrested.
Local media estimates 600 people are currently detained awaiting trial.

Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque reports from the Senegalese capital, Dakar.
