Shanghai residents queued in sweltering heat for compulsory Covid-19 mass testing on July 14, 2022. New outbreaks fuelled anxiety in the Chinese metropolis city still recovering from a two-month lockdown that was lifted only a few weeks ago. This came as Shanghai issued, for the third time this summer, its highest extreme heat alert as temperatures reached record highs. The city of 25 million residents announced a red alert, indicating temperatures were expected to rise to at least 40° Celsius (104° F).
