Sierra Leone's 'Peace diamond' sold for $6.5m in New York

One of the largest diamonds ever discovered has been sold at auction in New York for $6.5m.

The 709-carat "Peace Diamond" was found in Sierra Leone.

Its government says half of the proceeds will go directly towards helping its people - through clean water and health funding.

A first auction for the gem fell flat in May when Sierra Leone rejected the highest bid of $7.7m - arguing it failed to meet its own valuation.

Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo reports from New York.
