Like many other single mothers across the country, Meng from Shanghai encountered obstacles when applying for maternity benefits, which in China are only given to married women. Experts say that the number of single mothers has increased due to a change in ideals, but many still face judgment from society. But amid a declining birth rate in the country, there has been a push to allow single women to raise their own children.
