Speaker Nancy Pelosi Holds a Press Conference | LIVE | NowThis

PELOSI SAYS CONGRESS IS ‘CLOSE’ TO DEAL ON COVID-19 RELIEF: Speaker Nancy Pelosi holds her weekly press conference. With just days left in the 2020 legislative session, pressure is on Congress to pass not only a coronavirus relief bill, but also a funding bill to prevent another government shutdown. On Wednesday, the House voted on a one-week continuing resolution spending bill to keep the government funded until Dec. 18—its previous deadline was Friday, Dec. 11. This stop-gap solution will allow for more time to negotiate the spending bill as well as the COVID-19 relief bill. Pelosi told reporters that she believes Congress is ‘close’ on the coronavirus bill as the bipartisan talks continue. Yesterday, a bipartisan group of lawmakers presented a six-page summary of their proposed $900 billion relief plan. The summary included an ‘agreement in principle to provide $160 billion’ for state and local governments ‘as the basis for good faith negotiations,’ as well as an ‘agreement in principle’ on liability shields–demands from Democrats and Republicans, respectively. Another round of stimulus checks are not part of the bill, and the extended unemployment benefits have been slashed from $600 to $300 per week.
