Speaker Pelosi Holds a News Conference on Unemployment Benefits | LIVE | NowThis

EXTENDED UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS EXPIRE NEXT WEEK: Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other House Democrats hold a news conference to call for an extension for unemployment benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic. The $600 a week federal unemployment insurance benefit for over 25 million Americans is set to expire next week. Over two months ago, the House passed the $3 trillion HEROES Act, which extends enhanced federal unemployment benefits through January 31, 2021, in addition to additional economic stimulus payments and support for state and local governments. Pres. Trump and the GOP-controlled Senate have yet to offer any extension of these benefits, at a time when the overall nationwide unemployment rate is a staggering 11%, a level that has not been seen since the Great Depression.
