Italy had the West’s earliest reported coronavirus outbreak, and it was the first country in the world to impose a ban on travellers from China. But a new study suggests the earliest coronavirus strains circulating in the European country did not come directly from China. The research released on July 19, 2020, was done by Italian scientists focusing on patients in the Lombardy region. Their study, which is awaiting peer review, contradicts epidemiological evidence linking early cases to the central Chinese city of Wuhan where Covid-19 was first identified.
