Taiwan shuts down for annual air raid drill amid heightened cross-strait tensions

Roads emptied and people were ordered to stay indoors in parts of Taiwan, including its capital Taipei, as part of an air-raid exercise held on July 25, 2022. The drills aim to prepare Taiwan residents in the event of an attack by mainland China. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has renewed debate in Taiwan about how best to react in the event of an attack, amid stepped up mainland military manoeuvres around the island. Taiwan has raised its alert level since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, even though it has reported no unusual mainland military activity.
