Refugees are attempting to cross into Europe using a new route with deadly consequences.
Fewer are taking the old route across the Aegean Sea to the Greek islands of Lesbos and Chios.
Once on the islands, many of them have to endure dire conditions.
Now, thousands are heading north to cross the land border from Turkey into northeastern Greece.
But that means crossing the Evros River which has proved fatal for hundreds of refugees.
Al Jazeera’s Laurence Lee has this exclusive report from the Greece-Turkey border.
