In US news and current events today, in 2018, the Trump admin ousted Rear Adm. Tim Ziemer who ran the White House National Security Council global health security unit. Ziemer’s work on the Malaria Initiative during the Bush and Obama admins helped save more than 6 million lives. After Ziemer left, John Bolton, then Trump’s national security adviser, eroded the rest of the global health security unit. Tom Bossert, a counterpart to Ziemer at the Department of Homeland Security, was also pushed out by Bolton a month before Ziemer. Trump also failed to renew CDC epidemic prevention funding causing it to downsize in 39 out of 49 countries, including China, where it had been training frontline workers and strengthening labs and emergency systems to respond to an epidemic. Trump has repeatedly tried to cut the budget of the CDC but Congress blocked his attempts.
