Then-Pres. Trump announced in 2017 he would end an Obama-era initiative to allow trans members to serve in the U.S. military. Trump’s ban went into effect in 2019.

Newly confirmed Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin supported reversing the Trump-era ban in his confirmation hearing, saying, ‘if you're fit and you're qualified to serve and you can maintain the standards, you should be allowed to serve.’

LGBTQ+ civil rights organization Human Rights Campaign applauded Biden’s action in a press release, saying, ‘The greatest military in the world will again value readiness over bias, and qualifications over discrimination.’
