UAE plot to wage financial war on Qatar revealed

Global Leaks has released what appears to be a plan by the United Arab Emirates to destroy Qatar's economy and eventually jeopardize the hosting of the 2022 World Cup.

Another set of emails from the account of Yousef al-Otaiba, ambassador of the UAE to the US, has been shared on the Intercept website.

According to these leaks, a financial war on Qatar was allegedly being planned, using bond and debt manipulation to sow doubts about Qatar’s stability in the international market and instigate panic selling.

The aim was ostensibly to force Qatar to spend huge amounts of cash to rescue their currency from crashing, draining their cash reserves and putting the country in a vulnerable position.

The UAE and Saudi Arabia are the leaders of a group of four countries that severed ties with Qatar since June of this year.

Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher reports from Washington DC.
